The studio treatment rooms are private, quiet and relaxing. On your first Bowen visit you will be asked to fill out a client health history (download here). Most sessions are given while lying on a massage table, although a Bowen treatment can be given seated, such as in a massage chair or wheelchair should there be physical limitations. A client is not expected to disrobe but we ask that you wear or bring thin, loose clothing (yoga wear, t-shirts lightweight pants, shorts) that are comfortable and not restrictive or cumbersome.
Once comfortably positioned on the massage table, the treatment begins with the practitioner performing a series of gentle moves on the body. You are then left alone for several minutes to allow the body’s nervous system time to respond. This sequence is repeated throughout the session. Soon the nervous system begins to shift into a state of deep relaxation and often a quiet sleep overtakes the body-signifying that the healing has begun. Most sessions last from 40 to 60 minutes.
Depending on the condition(s), Bowen is typically scheduled one week apart for an average of 3 to 10 sessions. The results of this technique are best achieved if no other therapy (massage, PT, chiropractic, acupuncture) are being received during these weekly Bowen sessions.
